Planting Joy in all the spaces
Flowers bring joy in the simplest and most meaningful ways. Their vibrant colors and delicate fragrances uplift my spirits, reminding me of nature's beauty and bridging connections to the present moment. Doesn’t matter if it’s a single rose bloom on my desk or the purple lantana I planted last year finally spilling over my stone borders, flowers have an incomparable magical ability to conjure feelings of happiness and peace. A welcomed change of focus from all of the negativity in the world.
Gardening is slow magic and deliberate in intention.
And we are magic makers. Everything flourishes when given the right care and conditions—leaning towards sunlight, stretching confidently towards the sky. Not rushing to the finish line but about savoring the process, honoring each step along the way. I’ve been inspired to do the same.
Making flowers a part of my daily living offered another way of being. Life from a place of connection. Each flower, each leaf, was a reminder that life flourishes in the presence of care and attention. My focus shifted to my plants and the environment they needed to thrive. I learned to listen to listen, observe and appreciate all sources that encouraged growth.
Our energy affects everything around us. And once upon a time humans spent more time in their gardens than they did sitting inside their homes. It was so normal to spend time outdoors, grow our own food, flowers and herbs. Rising with the sun and watching it set after a day of getting dirt under our nails. So much was sourced right from home and we were so much better off for it!
So what’s the goal? Start from where I am.
Plants and flowers require consistent attention and care. Much like caring for ourselves - a sacred disruption, if you will-the efforts of watering, weeding, fertilizing and even just regular check-ins all help the garden grow. For an entire year, I’ve clipped, plucked and pondered over our garden creations. Picked our first lemons and peppers; ate our first (and only!) dragon fruit- we literally split it among the five of us, it was so good!; watched a patch of black eyed Susan come back for another year (grateful for whoever planted them because they’re perfect around our mailbox); and clipped/photographed so many flowers. And we’re still going.
Flowers are more than just beautiful blooms; they serve as a gateway to joy and a deep connection with nature. Nearly everything about them awakens the senses, inviting us to step outside and immerse ourselves in the natural world around us.
Why flowers?
I decided to grow flowers because they aren’t just for special occasions. Treating myself to a little floral joy by taking a stroll around my yard on an ordinary day is a transformative ritual I lean into guilt free. Through all of the seasonal changes they remind me of growth, resilience, and the importance of celebrating life's moments. There’s no such thing as small ones.
